Why Score Quality Is Not Optional
A score is not just a record of your musical ideas — it is the primary means by which your music reaches performers, and therefore audiences. A poorly prepared score creates friction at every stage: performers waste rehearsal time deciphering unclear notation, conductors lose confidence in the music, publishers reject submissions, and your professional reputation suffers.
Conversely, a beautifully engraved, clearly organised score communicates something important before a note is played: it says that the composer is a professional who respects the performers' time and takes their own work seriously. In a world where professional ensembles receive hundreds of scores and must programme selectively, this first impression matters enormously.
Clear notation allows performers to focus entirely on music-making rather than deciphering ambiguities. When notation is unclear, performers make guesses — and those guesses may not reflect your intentions.
Publishers assess submissions in part on the quality of notation. A score that requires extensive correction before publication adds cost and delay. Publishers will prioritise submission-ready work.
Your score circulates among performers, programmers, and publishers. A sloppy score creates an impression that is very difficult to overcome. A professional score builds a professional reputation.

Use this comprehensive checklist before submitting any score to a publisher, ensemble, competition, or festival. These are not stylistic preferences — they are professional standards that apply across the industry:
Core Engraving Principles Explained
Music engraving is the art of notating music clearly, beautifully, and in a way that communicates the composer's intentions precisely. While notation software handles many technical details automatically, understanding the underlying principles helps you make better decisions and catch errors that software misses.
Note spacing should reflect rhythmic value: a half note gets roughly twice the horizontal space of a quarter note. When music is densely packed or stretched artificially to fill a page, reading difficulty increases dramatically. Good notation software handles proportional spacing automatically if you let it — resist the temptation to override it just to reduce page count.
Every notational decision you make must be applied consistently throughout the entire score. If you place dynamic markings below the staff for strings, they must always be below the staff. If you use a particular beaming pattern for a rhythmic figure, it must look identical every time it appears. Inconsistency creates uncertainty in performers: they cannot tell whether a variation is intentional or a copying error.
The eye must be guided to the most important information first. Note heads, stems, and beams are primary — they must be the visually dominant elements on the page. Dynamics, articulations, and text instructions are secondary — they must be clearly readable but should not compete with the notes for visual attention. Use different font sizes and weights to establish this hierarchy deliberately.
Insert rehearsal letters or numbers at the start of every major section, and at regular intervals (every 8–16 bars minimum for large ensemble works, more frequently for complex music). A conductor who cannot say 'from letter G' is working without coordinates — and rehearsals become chaotic and inefficient. Rehearsal marks are not optional extras; they are professional infrastructure.
In a single-voice stave, stems go up if the note is below the middle line of the staff, and down if above. On the middle line, stems go down (generally). In two-voice writing, upper voice always stems up, lower voice always stems down. Beaming should follow the metric structure of the bar: beams should not cross beat boundaries in most time signatures, and should group notes in ways that reveal the rhythmic structure clearly.
In individual instrumental parts, page turns must occur at practical moments — not mid-phrase, not during technically demanding passages, never at a point where the performer has no free hand to turn. This often requires creative layout: adding a short blank system, using a 'V.S.' (volti subito) warning, or redistributing bars across systems. Poor page turn planning is one of the most common errors in student scores.
Choosing and Using Notation Software
Most professional composers today use dedicated music notation software. Each major application has different strengths, and the choice matters both for your workflow and for the quality of your output. Here is a practical guide:

Electronic & Electroacoustic Music: Special Documentation Needs
Electronic and electroacoustic music presents unique and serious documentation challenges. Unlike acoustic music — where a well-engraved score is sufficient for any future performance — electronic works require much more extensive documentation. The goal is always the same: the work must be fully performable by another person, in another place, at another time, without the composer being present.
This requires comprehensive technical documentation alongside the musical score. Under-documented electronic works become effectively unperformable within 10–15 years as technology changes. This is one of the major preservation challenges facing contemporary music today.
Pre-recorded electronic sounds accompanying a live performance. The tape (or file) plays back through a PA system while performers play live. You must provide: a clearly labelled audio file (WAV, 48kHz/24-bit), a detailed technical rider specifying PA setup and monitoring needs, a timing guide showing how the live part relates to the fixed audio, and ideally a click track or conductor cue track.
Real-time processing of live instruments through computer software (Max/MSP, SuperCollider, Ableton Live, etc.). This is technically the most demanding to document. You must provide: all software patches and versions, hardware requirements (audio interface, specific microphones, speakers), a full signal flow diagram, setup time requirements, and contact details for technical support. If a performer cannot set this up without you, the work becomes effectively unperformable.
Works where the computer responds to the performer in real time (listening to pitch, rhythm, or amplitude). The score must describe all interaction points clearly — what triggers what, what timing tolerance exists, and what happens if the computer 'misses' a cue. Include a fallback procedure for technical failures. Document any machine learning or AI components used.
There is no single universal standard for notating electronics, but consistency within your own score is essential. Choose from or adapt established systems: IRCAM's notation guides, Trevor Wishart's spectral notation, or purely descriptive text scores. The key is that a new performer and sound engineer must be able to understand what is required without asking you. Include a comprehensive legend in the score.
Every work involving electronics must have a detailed technical rider. This is a separate document (not in the score itself) specifying: PA requirements (number of channels, speaker placement), mixing console requirements, microphone types and placements, software and version numbers, hardware specifications, setup and soundcheck time required, and any safety or electrical requirements. Without a technical rider, your work cannot be programmed reliably.

Preparing for Donemus or Publisher Submission
When preparing a score for submission to Donemus or any professional publisher, there are specific technical and contextual requirements beyond basic notation quality. These requirements exist to ensure that the score can be published, distributed, and performed efficiently.
Donemus and most professional publishers distinguish clearly between the title page (a separate page before the music) and the first music page (where the score begins). Many composers confuse these, placing elements in the wrong location. Here is the correct Donemus layout:
